africa here i come
did you know that out of all of the money our government spends each year, only less than 1% goes to foreign aid (i.e. medicine and money for education and stuff like that). that pisses me off. there is so much poverty and sadness and pain in this world, and it can all be solved by a little sharing and helping. did you know that the cost to send a child in ethiopia to school for one year (the cost for a uniform, books, and tuition), with the exchange rate etc, is equal to the cost of one CD? 16 freaking dollars to change a child's life. I bet NSYNC never did that for you.ugh. the ungratefulness of people in america never fails to piss me off. now don't get me wrong. America has poverty and problems as well, but not in the same way as these other countries do. our problems are not as easy to fix, or to lessen anyway.
i've decided that im going to spend either a semester or a summer, or some like...7 weekish program in some third world country (either somewhere in africa like ethiopia or somewhere in southeast asia like thailand or cambodia) when i'm in college. i'll have to research it and talk to langford about getting me some info on kate perkins who i hear is doing a similar thing. now i'll admit, tonight's outburst was partly fueled by the brad pitt interiew with diane sawyer, but i've wanted to do this for ages. just some of the information and footage tonight solidified my decision. i mean, i'm the kids who wanted to give up her spring break in florida to go to asia and help the tsunami victims. not that my mother would let me of course. but i don't care what she says. im going on this one. sometime within the next five years, i will be in either africa or asia, helping the impoverished. and i plan to go back many times.
and i must say, despite all the bad press she gets and the disturbingness about her relationship with her brother, angelina jolie is definately my favorite actress. i mean, i dont enjoy all of her roles, but generally speaking she does a good job, she adopted a cambodian kid, AND she works with the UN and goes on humanitarian missions. i don't care if she makes out with her brother, she wins. by like a bazillion points. i mean, in terms of life changing roles she loses some, but cambodia and UN prevail, so she wins.
i am so ready to do something that will actually make a difference. i can't wait for college and some of these opportunities.
