London Baby!

wow. its been a crazy couple of days. tring band has been non stop absolutely insane. but fun for the most part. and then i had orientation at TCU. pretty fun. i must say its a lot cooler than i originally gave it credit for. i registered for classes and did some fun bonding things. Met some cool people and a...*gasp* fellow LIBERAL!!! oh we shall bond like superglue because i think we may very well be the only ones. But some of the conservatives are ok because they're not dumb ones. I met some smart ones...it was interesting. I think we shall all be debating buddies and have a jolly good old time.

I've been reading Fast Food Nation. It amuses me. and also pisses me off. And now for a random Howard Zinn Quote (note i am randomly flipping open Passionate Delcarations and picking the first quote that catches my eye that makes sense out of the context of the essay)

"Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Indepedence, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." (Or as amended by women who gathered in 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York, at a women's rights convention: "that all men and women are created equal." Or as a possible children's convention might say: "that all children are created equal.")

A common reaction to Jefferson's phrase "created equal" is that it is just not so; people are endowed with different physical and mental capacities, and with different talents, drives, and energies. But this is a misreading of the Delcaration of Independence. There is no period after the word "equal," but a comma, and the sentence goes on: "that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness." In other words, people are equal not in their naturaly abilities but in their rights...

To say that people have an equal right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness means that if, in fact, there is inequality in those things, society has a responsibility to correct the situation and to ensure that equality..."

ahh i love howard zinn...

i've decided that i want to join the peace corps after college. and if not, to at least do a trip like kate perkins and travel to a third world country to help and work for a period of time. i think that would be a good way to spend my time and energy. making a difference. sigh.

but until then i shall focus on education myself in every way possible to help me understand human nature and the nature of the world and society. through my english and history major. and while in london this next week i am going to absorb it like a sponge. and decide whether to return with in the next three years or to move on and broaden my horizons even more.

so next time i shall be writing it will be after having experienced a small part of european and english culture. score.

crack is whack

that was from a hot topic shirt

wow its been a really long time since i last updated. a few quick words:

went to key west. there was a hurricane. got to see dolphins and swim with the sea lions. the dolphins started having sex in front of us. i am so serious, it was absolutely hilarious.

have been working at my mom's office. accounting is super boring. tiffany, the intern from ACU, is pretty cool.

last night was easily the best sonic night we;ve had so far. everyone was so relaxed it was like old times. ahh nostalgia.

the novel is coming....fairly well. i'm on like, page four but a lot of it is just ideas and outline stuff. but they're good ideas and i'm begining to piece together the framework of the plot in my mind. the symbolism and stuff is getting a little complicated but so far i'm able to keep it mentally straight. we shall have to wait and see.

TCU orientation next week, tring rehersal and then englan here we come.

today LD and I went shopping (fun shoes and shirts and a kick ass belt) and then saw mr and mrs smithl. heath, wish you could have been there. its a really good movie. we need to crash together for sure (hahah PUN!)

Jill- that comment you made on my last post had me laughing for ten minutes. you rock my socks off.

nothing to insightful right now. i've been writing a lot of ideas in my novel instead, but i will still have deep entries here when it strikes me. i'm really laid back right now though.

saw resevoir dogs today. i la la la love quentin tarantino. he is a genius. i want to see the kill bills again to let it all sink in. my rating of qt's movies from best to worst:

1. pulp fiction
2. kill bill 2
3. resevoir dogs
4. kill bill 1

2 and 3 may switch after rewatching. but i think thats right for now. i want to see sin city so badly. ugh.

ok, late and tired. oh. read Fast Food Nation. It is UHmazing.

oh, and for deepak and jill: mr and mrs smith is totally worth the price of the ticket :)

africa here i come

did you know that out of all of the money our government spends each year, only less than 1% goes to foreign aid (i.e. medicine and money for education and stuff like that). that pisses me off. there is so much poverty and sadness and pain in this world, and it can all be solved by a little sharing and helping. did you know that the cost to send a child in ethiopia to school for one year (the cost for a uniform, books, and tuition), with the exchange rate etc, is equal to the cost of one CD? 16 freaking dollars to change a child's life. I bet NSYNC never did that for you.

ugh. the ungratefulness of people in america never fails to piss me off. now don't get me wrong. America has poverty and problems as well, but not in the same way as these other countries do. our problems are not as easy to fix, or to lessen anyway.

i've decided that im going to spend either a semester or a summer, or some like...7 weekish program in some third world country (either somewhere in africa like ethiopia or somewhere in southeast asia like thailand or cambodia) when i'm in college. i'll have to research it and talk to langford about getting me some info on kate perkins who i hear is doing a similar thing. now i'll admit, tonight's outburst was partly fueled by the brad pitt interiew with diane sawyer, but i've wanted to do this for ages. just some of the information and footage tonight solidified my decision. i mean, i'm the kids who wanted to give up her spring break in florida to go to asia and help the tsunami victims. not that my mother would let me of course. but i don't care what she says. im going on this one. sometime within the next five years, i will be in either africa or asia, helping the impoverished. and i plan to go back many times.

and i must say, despite all the bad press she gets and the disturbingness about her relationship with her brother, angelina jolie is definately my favorite actress. i mean, i dont enjoy all of her roles, but generally speaking she does a good job, she adopted a cambodian kid, AND she works with the UN and goes on humanitarian missions. i don't care if she makes out with her brother, she wins. by like a bazillion points. i mean, in terms of life changing roles she loses some, but cambodia and UN prevail, so she wins.

i am so ready to do something that will actually make a difference. i can't wait for college and some of these opportunities.

wicked

ok. so. summer has been like a roller coaster, constantely going back and forth between boring and busy. one day i have absolutely nothing to do and the next i have so much i can't even think straight. not that the busy stuff is very important or meaningful. but it passes the time and is occasionally amusing.

i'm currently reading Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. it is uh-mazing. i call it the Grendel of the Wizard of Oz (langford alums you know what i mean). I am seriously empathizing with the Witch right now (or Ephalba as her actual name is). She is for sure the best tragic hero ever. Beats out Grendel I think. For starters, she's green. GREEN! how cool is that? not only my favorite color, but my political party as well. double points for that. Plus, she's indepedant, she's not religious, and she goes underground to try and overthrow and evil dictatorship government. ok. that right there just makes her the coolest character ever, but to top it all off....she's magical. she rides a broom and can do magicy things. and did i mention she's hilarious? ok. so. settled. Ephalba the Wicked Witch of the West is by far the coolest fictional character ever created. She makes Harry Potter look like a....well i don't know, not very cool fictional character. so psha.

so monday is the star wars thing...seniors are you ready? je ne sais pas the time or theater yet. probably a seven-ish showtime. wheee for summer and doing stupid things.

k. fri pam and i saw sisterhood of the traveling pants. it was pretty good. i want to read the books. i'll have to hit up the library sometime soon. i officially have a summer reading list and summer movie watching list. which is way better than any other reading list i've ever had because I'm the one who chose all the books. score! it's exciting. and....it seems i have lost it. hmmm. oh. i think its in my purse. je will have to check on that.

and what else is new? i dunno. fran refuses to e-mail me back. i think she's hating me for not e-mailing her for like 3 weeks leading up to and during the AP tests. oh well. actually, she's probably just busy enjoying her holiday, what? oh. i'm writing a novel. it was going to be a play, but it turns out it works better as a novel since what i'm saying doesn't really come off well in an all dialogue environment. so its a novel. in its verhy earliest stages. i'm taking it slowly. it will probably take me awhile to write. like 2 years. and part of me really wants to take my satire and expand into a longer, novella length work. but that will have to wait because i'm busy with my other story now AND i don't think i should expand that satire until i'm older and more ready to. it needs more life experiences in it. I need more life experiences to fix it. and more education. and more practice. which is partly why i'm writing this novel. it's tentatively called "A Satire on American Culture for the Educated Citizen". Sounds boring, no? but it is not. just a title to scare away stupid conservatives (stupid is modifying the invisible word "people" and not the political ideiology though god/lord/heaven/allah/some mysterious higher power/nothingness knows i don't agree with it)

hmmmbored.

off to finish wicked and then maybe buy some disposable waterproof cameras for our trip to florida nex weekend.
